The short answer
Market research can cost nothing but your time, or it can run into the tens of thousands of dollars for large survey and consulting projects. For most small businesses, the right budget depends on one thing: how expensive is the decision the research supports? Checking whether your prices are competitive doesn't need the same budget as deciding whether to open a second location.
Option 1: Do it yourself (free, but costs time)
You can learn a great deal from public sources: competitor websites, pricing pages, Google reviews, listing sites, job postings, local news and government data. The cost is your time and the risk of missing things or reading data inconsistently.
Good for: quick checks, very tight budgets, owners who enjoy research.
Watch out for: confirmation bias (finding what you hoped to find) and analyses that never get finished.
Option 2: Software tools (monthly subscriptions)
SEO and marketing platforms, review-monitoring tools and industry data services sell monthly subscriptions. They're excellent at specific jobs, like tracking keywords or pulling listing data, but they give you data, not conclusions. Someone still has to interpret it and decide what to do.
Good for: businesses with staff who'll use the tool regularly.
Watch out for: paying for dashboards nobody opens.
Option 3: Freelancers
Freelance researchers and analysts charge by the hour or by the project, and quality varies widely. A strong freelancer with experience in your industry can be great value. Be clear about scope, sources and deliverables before starting.
Option 4: Small, focused agencies
Smaller agencies often sell fixed-price packages built around common questions like competitor comparisons, review analysis and expansion assessments. You get a finished report with recommendations at a predictable price. As a reference point, SignalPoint's own introductory pricing is:
- Competitor Snapshot: $149
- Customer Intelligence Report: $249
- Market Opportunity Report: $349
- Business Expansion Report: $599
- Monthly Intelligence Subscription: $599/month
Other agencies price differently, so compare what's included, not just the number.
Option 5: Large research and consulting firms
Full-service firms run custom surveys, focus groups, and large data and strategy projects. These are built for bigger budgets and longer timelines and are usually more than a local small business needs. They make sense for high-stakes decisions such as launching a new product line or entering many markets at once.
What drives the price
- Scope. Number of competitors, markets or questions.
- Primary vs. secondary research. Surveys and interviews (primary) cost far more than analyzing existing public information (secondary).
- Depth of analysis. A data dump costs less than findings with recommendations.
- Speed. Rush timelines cost more.
- Ongoing vs. one-time. Monitoring is priced monthly. One-off projects are priced per report.
How to decide how much to spend
- Write down the decision. "Should we raise our management fee?" or "Should we expand to Sarasota?"
- Estimate what a wrong call costs. A failed expansion can cost far more than a mispriced service.
- Spend in proportion. Small, reversible decisions call for lightweight research. Big, hard-to-reverse decisions justify deeper work.
- Start small. A low-cost snapshot often tells you whether deeper research is needed at all.
Questions to ask any research provider
- What sources will you use, and will you cite them?
- What exactly will I receive, and in what format?
- How do you handle information that isn't publicly available?
- Do you include recommendations, or only data?
- Is there a contract or minimum commitment?
